The moral imagination and critical capacity of Zimbabwean graffiti artists challenges a market-driven docility. This roundtable is a co-production of The Nature of Cities and the new website Arts Everywhere, where these responses are also published. What are examples of graffiti as beneficial influences in communities, as propellants of expression and dialog? Where are they? How can they be nurtured? Can they be nurtured without undermining their essentially outsider qualities? Interest in these art forms as social expression is broad, and the work itself takes many shapes-from simple tags of identity, to scrawled expressions of protest and politics, to complex and beautiful scenes that virtually everyone would say are “art”, despite their sometimes rough locations. “Street art”, graffiti’s more formal cousin, which is often commissioned and sanctioned, has a firmer place in communities, but can still be an important form of “outsider” expression. In some cities, it is legal, within limits, and valued as a form of social expression.

Don’t be scared to step out of the box and do something different.ġ0- Don’t listen to me. No matter what name you chose, the most important thing is style above all.ĩ- Be original. Unless you’re trolling, in which case LOL.Ĩ- Please remember that style is king. If you like it, rock it!ħ- Stay away from clichés. You can’t please everyone but you can start by pleasing yourself first. There will always be haters and people trying to call you out or criticize your name. Ultimately, each person reflects something intimate about them in one way or another.Ħ- Don’t try to please people. Some people lean towards extravagance, others are more conservative. Just grab a piece of paper and doodle the first letters that come to mind and take it from there.ĥ- Find your sweet spot. Let the name come naturally or it will sound forced and insecure. So unless you want to be made fun of and given a quick graffiti lesson, stay away from legendary names or other super famous international writers.Ĥ- Don’t over think it. With the internet, you have no excuses not to go see who did what and who were the main dudes and legends that made this whole graffiti thing possible. Avoid the confrontation altogether and write something else, even if you really like the name.ģ- Know your general graffiti history. Don’t start writing the same name as an already established local writer.

Here is a list of things to consider when choosing graffiti names.ġ- What type of graffiti are you doing? Are you in to doing tags and bubble letters or wild style full color pieces? Are you going to be painting a lot of legal walls or freight trains or everything from A to Z? Sometimes your graffiti style will determine the main characteristics of your name.Ģ- Know your city’s heritage. So, if you’re the more rational type, and want to educate yourself a bit before making a commitment, you came to the right place. In the pre-internet era, people often started with really basic corny names like Joker, King and Diablo before upgrading to something more solid and original. Over time, they either won it or eventually changed it to something else. Some people don’t really think much about it and the names just comes to them.
